The Cowan Property lies on the north shore of Stoney Lake at Boschink Narrows. Kawartha Highlands Provincial Park is to the North as well as the Peterborough County Game Preserve. This property is in an important part of the east-west corridor of woodland along the north shore of Stoney Lake. Objectives of this preserve are to protect the water resources of the area and ensure long term health and species diversity of the trees. Right now a number of endangered species are located on the property including Butternut trees and Five-lined Skinks.
